This was a workshop designed to tackle self-stigma in persons living with HIV and the female vulnerable population. Collaborative efforts with UNAIDS, NAP+ Ghana, Beyond Stigma, Zvandiri, and Ghana SR-HR Alliance fostered a successful engagement towards the elimination of self-stigma using a mental health approach.
Several topics, led by the facilitators, were discussed to help participants move from internalised stigma to self-worth. Among the topics discussed within the six-day program included how HIV limits me, relationships and fear of disclosure, self-stigma and emotions, Shame & Guilt, HIV Treatment and staying in my own business, the power of Thinking, Judgements about HIV, and forgiveness. These topics were explored through Focused Group Discussions, providing participants with a safe space to reflect, share, and gain insights on how to overcome self-stigma and build emotional resilience.
Central to all the modules and activities was the Inquiry-Based Stress Reduction (IBRS) technique. Integrated into the teaching modules, the IBRS technique equipped participants with practical skills and tools to manage emotional challenges related to self-worth, stress, anxiety, depression, and fears.
